Abstract

The article attempts to consider the main problems of modern teaching of
foreign languages. Particular attention is paid to the situation in non-linguistic universities,
where the role of learning foreign languages is often downplayed due to the dominant role
of special disciplines and the limited opportunities of educational institutions. Based on his
own professional experience, the author divides the problems in teaching a foreign language
into three groups in accordance with the three parties involved in the process: the teacher,
the student and the educational environment as a whole. In each aspect, a number of
circumstances are identified that directly affect the quality of teaching and mastering a
foreign language, recommendations are given for optimizing the process of forming a fullfledged personality of a professional specialist. All the proposals indicated in the article,
which are within the competence of the teacher, have found their practical application in
the teaching work of the author and have shown a significant improvement in the quality
indicators of working with the material and its assimilation.
